FRESH MEET, a new play by Oklahoma writers, is making it’s world debut starting February 10, 2012 for a limited run. A broad collection of comic scenes and sketches, it features six actors playing twenty-four different characters. The scenes travel through time and space, venturing from a typical American office building, to 1950s New York, to heaven, and beyond. The script is a collaborative project, written by Rebecca McCauley, Rodney Brazil, Lisa Lasky, Robert Matson, Holly McNatt, and Peter Young. All of Fresh Meet’s co-writers have strong Oklahoma ties, with 4 out of 6 currently living right here in the metro.

Fresh Meet makes a clear declaration: Brief encounters happen for a reason. When we meet new people we instantly feel something: sometimes love, sometimes hate, sometimes we don’t know what it is. Frequently it changes over time, and it usually turns out we were completely wrong. Why is it so hard to figure people out? The show takes a hilarious look at the brushes and collisions people have everyday, and tackles the mystery of why, no matter how imperfect, we can’t seem to live without each other.

Next Stage is a new performing arts group recently formed by local artists Rebecca McCauley, Todd Clark, and Rodney Brazil. Next Stage was born out of the local need for a development outlet for new plays. “We have pulled together a team of writers and theatre artists to collaborate on taking scripts through the necessary stages to help each project reach its maximum potential. Each project goes through a series of readings, workshops and revisions to create the best production. Since this is Next Stage’s first production, the decision was made to invite local writers to collaborate on a piece that would jump-start the group’s mission. “We are looking forward to debuting this original, funny, offbeat collection.” says Brazil.

The cast of Fresh Meet features Dana Hanley, Holly McNatt, Rebecca McCauley, Sean Eckart, Rick Foresee and Brett Young. The show is directed by Rodney Brazil. Performances are February 10, 11, 17 & 18 at The Boom, 2218 NW 39th St. in Oklahoma City. All shows start at 8pm. All seats are $12.
Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma opens a brand new season with the inspiring comedy, XANADU, showing at Lyric’s Plaza Theatre from January 25 through February 11, 2012. The New York Times calls it “heaven on wheels” and “ingenious”.

This over-the-top, hysterical roller-skating musical spoofs the outrageously bad 1980s film about a beautiful muse who descends from the heavens of Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach and inspires a struggling artist to pursue his dreams. It’s hilarity on wheels for anyone who has ever wanted to feel inspired.

This production is under the direction of Alan Muraoka, who directed Lyric’s productions of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL and HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2 in 2007 and 2009, and has many Broadway, Off-Broadway and National tour credits as an actor including MISS SIAGON, THE KING AND I, ANYTHING GOES and MAME. Some might recognize Muroaka as Alan, proprietor of Hooper’s Store on Sesame Street since 1998. Muroaka is ready to bring something different to Lyric’s Plaza Theatre stage to help kick off the new season.

“This show has awesome 80s music with roller skating and even some fake Australian accents. That’s what awaits you in the upcoming Lyric production of XANADU,” says Muroaka. “The music will make you want to dance in the aisles, but don’t because we’ll probably be roller skating in them. A great time is guaranteed by all who experience it.”

Completing Muraoka’s artistic staff for XANADU is Chris Castleberry, choreographer; Brian Hamilton, music director; Christopher Domanski, set designer; Jeffrey Meek, costume designer; Art Whaley, lighting designer; Brad Poarch, sound designer and Jeff Cochran, stage manager.

A familiar face on Lyric’s stage, Oklahoma City native, Lexi Windsor, is playing the young and perky Kira in Lyric’s production of XANADU. Audiences will recognize Windsor as Gretchen in Lyric’s 2011 production of BOEING BOEING and Evelyn Nesbit in Lyric’s 2011 summer production of RAGTIME.

“ I love the music of Electric Light Orchestra, and I’m so excited to go to the theatre every night, throw on some roller skates and rock out to ELO for a fun evening of live music and slaphappy comedy,” says Windsor. “But ultimately, I love the challenge. I haven’t had a role with this much responsibility on the Lyric stage before, so it is truly an honor to attempt something of this measure.”

Joining Windsor on Lyric’s Plaza stage and playing Kira’s forbidden love is New York City’s Adam Levinskas, as Sonny Malone. Levinskas, making his Lyric debut in the production of XANADU, played Asher in the National Tour of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. Other cast members include Renee Anderson (Lyric’s OLIVER!), Jacob Chancellor (Lyric’s 42nd STREET), Stephen Hilton (Lyric’s HAIRSPRAY and RAGTIME), Sheran Keyton, Eloise Kropp (Lyric’s HAIRSPRAY and A CHORUS LINE) , Parish Mechling (Lyric’s THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW and DECEMBER DIVAS), Jamard Richardson (Lyric’s HAIRSPRAY and RAGTIME) and Christopher Sieker (Lyric’s THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW).

As an added treat, the original star of the film Xanadu, Olivia Newton-John, has recorded a special pre-show announcement just for Lyric’s production.

Single tickets for XANADU are $40 and are available to purchase. For tickets go to www.LyricTheatreOKC.com, call (405) 524-9312, or come by Lyric’s box office at 1727 NW 16th St, Oklahoma City, OK.

Performance times are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m. with a 2:00 p.m. matinee on Saturday afternoon. XANADU is sponsored by Bank of Oklahoma, Chesapeake Energy, The Oklahoman, Allied Arts and the Oklahoma Arts Council.

Could these commercials for Safe Auto Insurance get any worse?! They are terrible. No, they are TURRRRible! They make me feel embarrassed even when nobody else is in the room while I watch them.

I admit, I *did* like the “Lady Re-run” spot. She cracked me up.

But every other commericial, from the obnoxious song, to “Justin Case,” to these dipshit guys and the new “Sassy Black Lady.”. Which is just insulting in the extreme. Couldn’t they see that stereotype a mile away when it was first presented on paper?

Alright, so WHY is this theatre releated, let alone OKC TheatreScene related? When I first saw Justin Case, I thought it was Wil Rogers. Through my box wine blur.

Auditions for Reduxion Theatre Company's Much Ado About Nothing

What a cast!

The national tour of THE ADDAMS FAMILY has quite a cast! Thanks to Celebrity Attractions, the show will hit OKC January 17-22, 2012. Dig out some of your old Playbills and wait at the Civic Center’s stage door for some autographs!

But who’s in it?

Douglas Sills, Sara Gettelfinger, Pippa Pearthree, Martin Vidnovic… CRISTA MOORE! Catch that line up!?

I hope that these tours featuring some real Broadway talent continue to hit OKC! For quite a long time, it seemed we had quite a long stretch of non-Equity and and/or sem-professional tours, (Anybody catch that tour of GREASE that hit in the late 90’s? I swear, there’s still guys in haz-mat suits cleaning that up at the Civic Center. But thanks to Dawn soap, many ushers were able to be scrubbed and saved.)

And before anyone complains- I’m not saying it must be a ‘star studded’ tour to be *good* - but when I’m paying those prices, I can’t help but want to see some Broadway names!

Last night, I had to return an anthology of Christopher Durang’s plays to the library. Cuz it was about a week overdue. I like to support the library system by keeping my books a week or so longer than I should. It’s philanthropy, dammit. And yes, I already have two copies of this particular Durang anthology, but like so many things in my life, I couldn’t find them. I’ve been to DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES, but I’ve never been to ME!

What the hell am I talking about, ladies and gentlemen? Oh yeah- so I’m on the way home from the library when I realize I have 40% off coupons to HOBBY LOBBY and a 50% off at MICHAEL’S. I put the iPod on shuffle- and I’m surprised sometime after THE CAPEMAN’s act one ending, “Adios Hermanos” (and one day, I’m going to write a story about the best act one finales out there) but right after that- I’m surprised- something I haven’t heard in ages starts- and I guess my iPod added it randomly when I synched- but JULIAN KEYES starts up- and I’m excited to live again.

I haven’t heard it in years, it felt like. And it left me with a sense of longing usually reserved for the tshirt I didn’t buy when I saw THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE on Broadway.

WHAT, though, is JULIAN KEYES? It’s an unfinished musical by Dana P. Rowe and John Dempsey, writers of two other musicals I love dearly- THE FIX and THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK. I’ve got a wonderful demo recording of about 30 minutes of it- all that was recorded, ever, I believe, and a script of this much plus an extra scene. And I love it.

JULIAN KEYES is about an ordinary, depressed young guy who is, at the opening, trying to kill himself. Halfway between life and death, he meets his ‘Muse,’ who offers him two doors- thru one he will ‘simply cease to be’ and another, where he’ll return to life, but ‘different than before.’ So, what happens, is Julian returns to life, with his Muse, where he becomes a famous artist. But he must kill to create each new painting.

I freakin’ love it and WISH to see it! NOW! Magically completed and staged, just for me. Oh I love it, I do.

Check out the ‘poster’ I just made! Hilarious,...

Check out the ‘poster’ I just made! Hilarious, huh? Oh, I crack myself up. But in serious news: CARRIE returns, January 31!

"Baby, Dream Your Dream” from SWEET CHARITY just popped up on the iPod.
ALSO- I know, I don’t do a wishlist EVERY Thursday, but I’m a busy career girl. I do what I can, get off my back.

This morning, one of my favorite songs shuffled into existence on da iPod shortly after starting work at my demanding day job. And reminded me how much I’d love to see a revival of this show. No, it’s not perfect. But it’s got good songs. Weird. Touching. A combination I like- what is it? It’s Hal Prince’s 1987 twelve performance Broadway failure- ROZA.

First off- anyone who knows me, knows about my love for theatre poster art. ROZA is one of the posters I own and love. Roza’s earring makes the “O” in her name. I love it.

Anyways. ROZA has a score by Gilbert Becaud and Julian More. Who are they? I don’t know. The story is about Madame Roza, an aging prostitute who has survived everything from life on the streets to concentration camps and has now settled in a slum in Paris, where she takes in the children of younger prostitutes- after their mothers have disappeared or are out looking for work. The cast had some names, tho- Georgia Brown as Roza, Marcia Lewis as Madame Katz, and Bob Guntun as Roza’s transexual neighbor, Lola. (!)

Back to what got me started on this, in the first place: The show’s opening number, HAPPINESS, popped up on the iPod this morning. And it made me think how much I wish the show could be done again. I think it would be beautiful in the City Arts Center Theatre, where an interesting set could spill out everywhere, depecting the jumbled tenement building and neighborhood where the show takes place. It could be cheaper than it sounds. Hah.

Okay… since I don’t see anybody jumping up and adding ROZA as a surprise show to their season, I’m back to my iPod.

“You don’t know…what happiness is…”

Tulsa Opera Seeks Jiggling Genitalia

Are you looking for an exciting career in show business? Do you have a combined talent of acting and all-nude stage combat? If so, Tulsa Opera is in need of your services.

That’s right! Time for one of my favorite benefits of the year! Carpenter Square’s BEST IN 10! Friday, August 19, 7:10pm (isn’t that clever?).

What’s the best part of Best In Ten? The 10-minute plays…the silent auction…he stars? Hell! The ‘wine pull’ alone is worth the price of admission! I almost needed a U-Haul to make it back home, last year.

Friday, August 26 is Go Red for Women Night at Oklahoma Shakespeare in the
Park. Those who wear red will receive a reduced ticket price to the show
($8.00). Patrons will also have the opportunity to donate to Go Red for
Women.

OSP’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream plays at the Water Stage in
the Myriad Gardens, at the corner of Reno and Hudson (301 W. Hudson). The
box office opens at 7:00 pm, seating opens at 7:30 pm with an 8:00pm
curtain.

In 2004, the American Heart Association (AHA) faced a challenge.
Cardiovascular disease claimed the lives of nearly 500,000 American women
each year, yet women were not paying attention. In fact, many even dismissed
it as an ³older man¹s disease.² To dispel the myths and raise awareness of
heart disease as the number one killer of women, the American Heart
Association created Go Red For Women a passionate, emotional, social
initiative designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health.

Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park is supported by the Oklahoma Arts Council,
Devon Energy, Chesapeake Energy, Allied Arts, The Inasmuch Foundation, the
Kirkpatrick Foundation, the Kirkpatrick Family Fund, Oklahoma City
University, UMB Bank and OCCF. For more information, visit
www.oklahomashakespeare.com.

It's The Day Of The Show, Y'all!

Opening tonight at Ghostlight is STILL LIFE by Alexander Dinelaris. The play had a brief run in NYC back in 2009 in an MCC production, starring Sarah Paulson (of the original cast of Tracy Letts’ KILLER JOE).

From Ghostlight’s website:

With her star on the rise, photographer Carrie Ann inexplicably shuts down at the pinnacle of her career. Lost, and afraid to even pick up her camera, her sudden descent is interrupted by an unexpected romance with Jeff, a trend analyst who becomes determined to help her move on, even while facing his own uncertain future.

Congratulations on a new season, Ghostlight!

Theatrical Wishlist Thursday: SHAKE IT WHERE IT'S SLEAZY!

Theatrical Wishlist Thursday, where I WISH upon a ghostlight for a production of a show I feel is most deserving!

Take it where it’s easy! Shake it where it’s sleazy! Come, kick back, relax, at SAUCY JACK’S!

In 1995, a very small, very strange, brand new musical burst onto the scene at the infamous Edinburgh Fringe. That musical, SAUCY JACK & THE SPACE VIXENS is a hilarious and tuneful story of a trio of intergalactic crime fighters hunting down the dangeroung Slingback Killer during a dangerous night at Saucy Jack’s cabaret bar.

The score includes the showstoppers, Glitter Boots Saved My Life and All I Need Is Disco, as well as personal favorite, Cheer Up Bunny and Fetish Number From Nowhere.

This crazy nightclub in outer space story is crying for a wild environmental production at The Boom, where last season’s HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH played so beautifully! I’ve been crying for it for a few years, now. With multpile sell-out productions at the Fringe, as well as ending up in London’s West End- you might think this is some kind of British show that just won’t work in the States. Stop thinkin’ that! JACK’S has hit Seattle, Memphis, Houston- even Anchorage! So c’mon Oklahoma- c’mon somebody, make my SAUCY dream come true. I am available to direct. Hit me up!

Season Spotlight: LYRIC THEATRE

This just might be one of the most exciting seasons for the OKCTHEATRESCENE, ever. There’s some exciting shows coming up, and DO I EVER MEAN IT!

Have you checked out, or heard the word in the greenroom, about Lyric’s 2012 season? Whoa and wow! What a season!

XANADU- What a fun show! So excited about this- and I think it’ll be a perfect fit at Lyric’s Plaza Theatre. Have I mentioned my love of this space, before? What a great theatre! And again- what a fun show! The great Mary Testa was terrific in XANADU’s Broadway run… if only Lyric would bring her to OKC to play the role again. And Jackie Hoffman, too. Will Lyric have the onstage seats?

SPRING AWAKENING- I admit, I’m stunned that Lyric is doing this show. It’s not one that I love, but it’s not TOTALLY F*#&ED! That’s one of the songs. I’m not just masking vulgarity. (Isn’t that a funny term?) I think there’s three songs I like- but I’m very interested in it, and will see it. (I missed it on Broadway- but it certainly has its fans.) And again, another perfect fit for the Plaza.

BYE BYE BIRDIE- I’ve been wanting to see a big, good, fun production of this show for quite a long time. I love the score, as I love most of Mr. Charles Strouse’s scores! Wouldn’t be a riot if they were following it up with the insane flop sequel, BRING BACK BIRDIE?! Oh! That would be a fun summer season, Lyric! “THE HITS OF CHARLES STROUSE…and their sequels.” First up: BYE BYE BIRDIE, following by BRING BACK BIRDIE. Next up: ANNIE, followed by ANNIE 2! (Yes, ANNIE 2! I know, there’s also ANNIE WARBUCKS- but let’s bring back the original ANNIE 2: MISS HANNIGAN’S REVENGE- which features one of my favorite act one endings ever, “You, You, You!”)

SWEET CHAIRTY- Yes! Another fun ‘old’ show that I’ve been wanting to see! Speaking of great Cy Coleman musicals- Lyric! Bring THE LIFE to the Plaza! It would fit in great in the neighborhood! And it’s actually a crowdpleasing show. I saw it on Broadway and loved it to death. Remember the giant, flashing neon red high heel outside the Barrymore Theatre, everyone?!

THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP- I can’t wait to see this, too. I love Charles Ludlam. If you haven’t read his biography- RIDICULOUS, run out and get it- it’s interesting, fun- and will really make you wish you’d’ve been there…

And the rest:

CALL ME MADAM

CHITA RIVERA: MY BROADWAY

A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD

and of course, A CHRISTMAS CAROL.

Not that I’m not talkin’ smack about these shows- I’m just not interested. I love Ms. Rivera to no end- but I’d rather they were bringing her to town for THE VISIT, not for what seems like another retread of the revue/biographical show she’s been pushing around awhile…wasn’t it called A DANCER’S LIFE on B’way? Or somethin? Yeah, and FROG AND TOAD- it seems to be totally beloved- but I can’t stand that COOKIES song. A CHRISTMAS CAROL? Hmmm. I think I already know the ending. Because I’ve seen it five thousand times. But that’s just me. I’m mean. It’ll sell some tickets!

But LYRIC! WHAT A SEASON! I can’t wait!

And The Nominees Are:

Oklahoma City Theatre Company have announced the nominees for their “First Annual Awards Gala.”
